All contractors licensed in the state of California are required to post a $15,000 surety bond. In posting this bond, the contractor (the bond principal) agrees to adhere to the statues and regulations outlined in the California Business and Professions Code (Division 3 Chapter 9).
There are three other types of license bonds related to contractor licensing in California:
A Qualifying Individual Surety Bond assures that the contractor (the qualified contractor for the license) will follow all regulations outlined in the California Business and Professions Code.
A Farm Labor Contractor Bond ensures that the contractor engaged in the business of farm labor contracting will follow the statutes in the applicable Labor Code of the State Code of California. (Ch. 3, Part 6, Div. 2)
A Contractor’s Disciplinary Bond is required if disciplinary or violation of the license has taken place. It is required by the state for the contractor to operate and regain an active license status. The bond amount varies depending on the level of the violation, but cannot be less than $15,000.
If a contractor fails to meet the guidelines guaranteed by the bond, impacted parties can claim up to the full bond amount.

The State of California, the Contractors State License Board, requires contractors to acquire one or more of the bonds listed above.
If the contractor is responsible for damages to another party, that harmed party can claim against the bond up to the full amount of the bond. The bond also assures that the contractor will abide by the State of California’s licensing laws and statues.
More information regarding specific licensing requirements can be found at the State Licensing Board website.
